The Sofia Side is the left bank of the Volkhov, home to the Detinets, St. Sophia Cathedral and the museum reserve, and the walk from a hotel door to the Kremlin gates rarely takes more than ten minutes. Stay here if your trip is built around the Kremlin and you're in town for one or two nights: the railway station is on this bank too, and most hotels are close enough to reach on foot with a suitcase. The densest cluster of hotels sits on Gazon, Velikaya and Meretskova-Volosova streets, right beside the Kremlin rampart.

The right bank is Yaroslav's Court with its ancient churches, the pedestrian Alexander Nevsky embankment and that postcard view of the floodlit Detinets across the water. It suits travelers who want to walk in the evening and photograph the Kremlin from a distance rather than sleep right up against its wall. The city's most affordable nights are concentrated here, and the Sofia Side is five minutes away across the pedestrian bridge.

If your trip runs longer than one night or you're traveling with children, an apartment almost always beats a hotel room: a kitchen, a washing machine, a separate bedroom — and the same quarter of an hour on foot to the Detinets. Most of these are on Desyatinnaya, Prusskaya, Chudintseva and Meretskova-Volosova: quiet streets inside the Okolny Gorod, where the earthen rampart begins just behind the building. For the same comforts, an apartment usually works out cheaper than a room in the hotel next door.

The city is compact, so saving money here costs you nothing in logistics: the cheapest beds and rooms sit in the same blocks as the expensive hotels. The formats vary — from a classic hostel with shared dorms to small guesthouses and two-star hotels with their own parking in the courtyard. This is the option for one or two nights on the road between Moscow and St. Petersburg, when a room is only there for sleeping before you walk out to the Kremlin in the morning.

The upper end of the market here is small, but it does exist: a handful of hotels keep a pool, a sauna, a spa and their own restaurant, which is enough to stop the evening after a walk along the ramparts from ending in your room. All of them have parking and meeting rooms, so the format works equally well for a family weekend and a business trip. In winter, when the museums close early, an indoor pool noticeably extends the day.

Beyond the historic core, the city turns into private neighborhoods and suburbs — Michurinskaya, Kaberova-Vlasyevskaya, Nekhinskaya, the village of Grigorovo — where guest houses with a garden, a barbecue and parking in the yard take the place of hotels. This is the choice if you've come by car: the Kremlin is a quarter of an hour away, and you never have to hunt for a space downtown. In summer these houses also win on the yard itself, something central hotels simply don't have.

The 12th-century Yuriev Monastery and Vitoslavlitsy, the museum of wooden architecture, stand on the southern edge of town where the Volkhov flows out of Lake Ilmen, five kilometers from the Detinets along Yuryevskoye Highway. If your trip is built around them, it makes sense to stay right here: the monastery gates are within walking distance, and the lake is a short evening stroll away. A car isn't essential, but with one you'll reach Vitoslavlitsy and the Kremlin just as quickly.

Novgorod Oblast begins immediately outside the city limits: Lake Ilmen and the Volkhov give you shorelines, fishing and a quiet the city itself doesn't have. Country retreats and cottages rent out the whole house — with a banya, a barbecue area and access to the water — and that suits a group or a family weekend more than a sightseeing trip. You'll need a car to get to the Kremlin from here, but they're easy to pull into straight off the M-10 highway.
