Frequently Asked Questions
If you're coming for the Detinets, St. Sophia Cathedral and the museum reserve, choose the Sofia Side: from any hotel there it's no more than a ten-minute walk to the Kremlin gates. If you'd rather photograph the Kremlin across the river and stroll the Alexander Nevsky embankment, take the Market Side. The pedestrian Kremlin Bridge links the two banks and the crossing takes five minutes, so there's no wrong answer here — the only difference is what your morning route looks like.
The range is wide: from a hostel bunk and a room in a two-star hotel to premium apartments and the city's only five-star hotel. An apartment with a kitchen usually works out cheaper than a comparable hotel room near the Kremlin, and the most affordable options are concentrated on the Market Side and in the residential districts. The May holidays and midsummer are the priciest stretch; current prices are shown in the hotel cards on this page.
Yes — along Yuryevskoye Highway and on the southern edge of town there's a hotel with a restaurant, apartments and guest houses: from the closest of them the monastery gates are a fifteen-minute walk. If you're driving, staying in the center works just as well — Vitoslavlitsy is about ten minutes away along Yuryevskoye Highway.
High season runs from May to September: long daylight hours, open exhibitions at Vitoslavlitsy, festivals inside the Kremlin. The most expensive and busiest period is the May holidays and mid-July. In April, October and November the same hotels cost noticeably less, and there are no queues at St. Sophia Cathedral.
The railway and bus stations sit side by side on the Sofia Side, about a kilometer and a half from the Detinets. The walk takes around twenty minutes; the bus along Karl Marx Avenue takes five. Most Sofia Side hotels are located exactly between the station and the Kremlin, so getting there on foot with a suitcase is easy.
