Hotels in Pskov

Almost everything people come to Pskov for fits inside the triangle between the Krom, Dovmont's Town and the Pogankin Chambers, so staying in the Okolny Gorod lets you skip transport altogether. From Muzeyny Lane, Profsoyuznaya, Pushkina and Sovetskaya streets it is a five- to ten-minute walk to the kremlin towers, and these blocks fall quiet in the evening. Boutique hotels in historic mansions stand next to very modest options here, which makes the area work equally well for a weekend for two and for a first visit to the city.

If you are traveling as a family or a group, renting an apartment is easier: your own kitchen helps when the plan involves an early start for Izborsk or a late return from a walk along the fortress walls. Most of the choice sits on Sovetskaya, Lenina and Nekrasova streets and around Oktyabrsky Avenue — the same ten to fifteen minutes on foot from the kremlin. The other advantage of apartments is that they hold more people than a standard hotel room, so nobody ends up split across different floors.

Across the Pskova River, along Leona Pozemskogo and Verkhne-Beregovaya streets, lies the most prestigious part of town: restored 17th-century merchant chambers, five-star buildings and the colorful row of houses on the Golden Embankment directly opposite the Krom. There is no metro and no interchanges here — you reach the center over the Troitsky and Kuznetsky bridges, usually a ten- to fifteen-minute walk, and at rush hour it is simpler to take a taxi, which is cheap in Pskov. Choose Zapskovye for the views of the water and the fortress walls, and for the most expensive rooms in the city.

Spas are rare in Pskov: only a few hotels have a pool, a sauna and treatments, and they stand on different banks — by the confluence of the Pskova and the Velikaya, in the center and in Zavelichye. The format earns its keep in autumn and winter, when long walks along the fortress walls turn cold and you want to warm up in the evening after a day of sightseeing. People book this kind of stay for a weekend for two, or for an unhurried two or three nights that combine seeing the city with time to rest.

Pskov is an inexpensive city, and a modest budget does not banish you to the edge of town: simple hotels and guest houses stand a quarter of an hour from the Krom, along Oktyabrsky Avenue and out by Krestovskoye Highway. The difference from the center is usually in the finishes and the breakfast rather than the commute — the city is compact, buses run, and taxis cost little. A logical choice if you came to see fortresses and monasteries and use the room only for sleeping.

Pskov is often used as a base for day trips: the bus to Izborsk with its fortress and the Slovenian Springs takes thirty to forty minutes, Pechory with the Pskov-Caves Monastery is about an hour away, and Pushkinskiye Gory with Mikhailovskoye is farther but still fits into a single day. If you are here for two or three nights and want to start the morning at the Krom, sleep in Pskov itself; if you came specifically for the monastery and would rather not spend time on the road, it makes more sense to stay in Pechory beside its walls. The third option is a base on the road between the towns — handy if you have a car and do not plan to return to Pskov every evening.

Beyond the city limits begin the forests, the banks of the Velikaya and Lake Peipus with its sandy beaches — if you have a car, that is where to look. Country retreats and guest houses win people over with quiet, banyas and grounds where there is something to keep children busy: a good contrast after a day among fortress walls and museum halls. The one drawback is that getting there without your own transport is awkward, so this is not the choice for a short weekend traveling light.
