Kostroma
Kostroma sits in a picturesque spot — where the Kostroma River meets the Volga. From the opposite bank there's a view of the Ipatiev Monastery: it was here, in 1613, that the Zemsky Sobor called the first of the Romanov dynasty to the throne. The city center has preserved its "fan-shaped" layout from the era of Catherine the Great: streets radiate like rays from the fire tower and the Merchant Rows straight down to the river. It's worth coming for a weekend to stroll through the historic quarters, sample the famous Kostroma cheese, and drop by for a visit with Snegurochka.
A Walking Route from the Fire Tower to Ostrovsky’s Gazebo
The city is compact — you won’t need a car, and the entire center can be covered on foot.
Susaninskaya Square. Start your walk at the 19th-century fire tower, built by the architect Fursov in the 1820s. Next to the tower stands a small monument to Bobka the dog, who lived at the fire station.
Merchant Rows. Walk beneath the arches of the Red Rows and the Great Flour Rows, dating from the late 18th century.
Embankment. Head down Molochnaya Gora to the Volga, where the famous Ostrovsky Gazebo stands — the very one that served as a set for the film “A Cruel Romance.”
Ipatiev Monastery and “Kostroma Sloboda.” Cross the bridge over the Kostroma River (about a 30–40 minute walk) to see the ancient frescoes by Guriy Nikitin’s artel and “Kostroma Sloboda” — an open-air museum of wooden architecture.

Summer — a time for flavor and long walks. In July the city warms up to +23 °C. It’s the perfect moment for Volga cruises and culinary discoveries: on July 4–5 the Merchant Rows host a large cheese festival. Tip: book a room a couple of months ahead — intimate options like the Skvorechnik Art Hotel are the first to go.
Winter — a time for fairy tales. In January the thermometer holds at −7 °C during the day and −12 °C at night. The main draw for visitors is Snegurochka’s Terem with its Ice Room, where a −14 °C frost reigns year-round. Yuletide festivities and the skating rink in Berendeevka Park round out the experience.
Shoulder season — a time for a relaxed visit. September is the “golden middle.” The weather still pleases with a mild +12 °C, and there are noticeably fewer tourists. The main event of early autumn is the “Silver Boat” fireworks festival. It’s a great chance to see the city without the rush and at more pleasant prices.

If you're driving and value parking and quiet, look at Prospekt Mira and Berendeevka — about ten minutes from the square by car. And if you're passing through on the Golden Ring without lingering, the small hotels near Kostroma-Novaya station, 3.5 km southwest of the center, will suit you.
