It is no coincidence that Ryazan holds the title of Russia's New Year Capital.
The Kremlin, Pochtovaya, and Solotcha: A Two-Day Itinerary
Day one should be devoted to the Kremlin. It has stood on a hill at the confluence of the Trubezh and Lybed rivers since 1095 and has barely changed over the centuries. Inside the ensemble, be sure to visit the Assumption Cathedral with its unique seven-tier iconostasis, the 83-meter bell tower, and the ancient Church of the Nativity of Christ, dating from the 15th century.
After a walk through Cathedral Park, head down to the embankment to the monument of Yesenin, and then make your way to Pochtovaya Street. This is the city’s main pedestrian artery, where you should stop by the gastro-bars to try the local specialties — kurnik and kalinnik.
- Getting there: from the Ryazan-1 station, you can reach the Kremlin by bus No. 41 or take a walk — the route takes about 45 minutes.
- Where to stay: Ryazan has more than 250 hotels — find the right one. Most of the popular options are within walking distance of Pochtovaya. Prices start from 1,500 ₽ per room or from 450 ₽ for a bed in a hostel.
Day two should be spent in the surroundings. Just 20 km from the city lies Solotcha — a land of Meshchera pine forests. Here it is worth visiting the Nativity-of-the-Virgin Monastery (founded in 1390) and walking the picturesque Paustovsky Trail.
If you want to immerse yourself in a literary atmosphere, head to Konstantinovo, which lies 43 kilometers upstream. There, on the high bank of the Oka, the Yesenin family cottage has been preserved, and from the hills there are breathtaking views over the floodplain meadows.
When to Go: New Year Capital and Summer on the Oka
In winter: December and January are the peak period — Ryazan was chosen as the “New Year Capital.” During this time the city lights up with holiday illumination and fairs open. Daytime temperatures hold at around −4 to −6 °C.
Note that in winter the Assumption Cathedral is closed, so it is better to build your route around other sights: the bell tower, the Church of the Nativity of Christ, and the Airborne Forces Museum — the only specialized museum of its kind in the country.
In summer: by day the air warms up to +24 to +26 °C. August is the time of the “Sky of Russia” hot-air balloon festival. And on October 3 in Konstantinovo, large-scale events are held in honor of Sergei Yesenin’s birthday, drawing thousands of the poet’s admirers.
How do I get there? From Moscow’s Kazansky Station, trains depart almost every half hour. The fastest and most comfortable option is the double-decker express, which will whisk you to Ryazan in just two hours.

By car along the M5 "Ural" highway it's roughly two hundred kilometers and three hours or more without traffic. The main thing is that price here is set less by stars than by area and format: a four-star country sanatorium often works out cheaper than an aparthotel downtown. In summer and over long weekends the center and Solotcha get noticeably more expensive, while in winter it's easy to find something more modest in the city.
If it's your first time in Ryazan and you're staying one or two nights, take a hotel in the center: you'll fit in the Kremlin, the museums and an unhurried dinner without losing time to transfers. If you have several days and want quiet and pine air, choose Solotcha — buses run regularly from there, and the Kremlin plus the Yesenin estate museum in Konstantinovo fit comfortably into a single day.
