Ryazan's historic center is compact: the Kremlin stands on a hill above the Trubezh, with Kremlin Park, Sobornaya Street and the embankment spread out below it. Staying within a half-hour walk of Sobornaya Square makes sense if you're here for a night or two for the fortress itself, the Airborne Forces Museum and a wander through the old streets — you won't need a car or taxis at all. Most central hotels sit between the two railway stations and Sobornaya, so everything is within walking distance: the train, the Kremlin and the bus station with departures to Konstantinovo.

The Lastochka express from Moscow arrives at Ryazan-1, and from the station square it's about a twenty-minute walk to the Kremlin along Pervomaysky Avenue and Mayakovskogo Street. Hotels along this route also suit business travelers: Pervomaysky is where the offices are, and you can check in straight off the train without working out local transport. A good choice for a work trip and for a short weekend without taxis.

If your trip runs longer than three nights or you're traveling as a family, a room with a kitchen area turns out to be more practical than a standard hotel room: no hunting for a restaurant every evening. Ryazan's aparthotels cluster along Mayakovskogo Street, while nightly apartment rentals concentrate on Svobody, Chapaeva and Bystretskaya — the same blocks between the Kremlin and the railway station. The format works equally well on a long work assignment and on a trip with children, when a stove and a washing machine of your own matter.

North of the city begins Meshchera — pine forest, a bend of the Oka, Solotcha Monastery and the Konstantin Paustovsky house museum. Here you'll find formats that simply don't exist in Ryazan itself: park hotels, holiday resorts and cottages by the water, and they are usually booked for several nights at a time. By day it's an easy run into the city for the Kremlin and the museums, and in the evening you come back to the quiet of the pine woods.

There are no five-star hotels in Ryazan, so the ceiling for comfort here is four stars and city hotels with their own bathhouse block. A pool, sauna and spa area turn up both in congress hotels close to the center and in simpler places out toward the Oka, and the star count tells you little on this point — look at the actual set of facilities. A sensible pick for a winter trip, when long walks around the Kremlin aren't on, and for a stay with children.

In Ryazan, budget accommodation doesn't mean the outskirts: both dorm-bed hostels and two-star hotels sit either downtown or a couple of stops away. People take this option for a single night en route somewhere else, for a no-frills work trip and for student trips around the Golden Ring and Meshchera. Go by the distance to Sobornaya Square rather than by stars — in a compact center that decides more.

If you've come in your own car and plan day trips to Konstantinovo and Solotcha, it's easier to stay on the way out of town — along Solotchinskoe Highway and in Kanishchevo — rather than downtown. Parking is less of a problem here, spas and pools come up more often, and the Kremlin is still a quarter of an hour's drive away. The format suits a family trip of several days, when you need a base for day runs around the region.
