Tula
Tula is one of the most accessible destinations for a trip out of Moscow. The Lastochka high-speed train will get you there in just two hours. In a single visit you can take in the main sights: the 16th-century kremlin and the landscaped Kazanskaya Embankment with its wooden gazebos. All of these spots are within walking distance of one another, and the "Kremlin → embankment → Metallistov Street" route takes no more than 15 minutes on foot. In Tula’s historic center, all the main sights sit within a short walk of one another.
- The Tula Kremlin. A unique 16th-century fortress (1514–1520), built not on a hill but in a lowland. Two cathedrals stand on its grounds: the Assumption Cathedral, with murals by masters from Yaroslavl, and the Epiphany Cathedral, which now houses part of the collection of the Museum of Weapons.
- Kazanskaya Embankment. Just beyond the northern wall begins a modern public space that opened in 2018. We recommend walking across the “floating” bridge over the Upa, relaxing in the amphitheater, or renting a boat.
- Metallistov Street. Next comes a pedestrian street with restored 18th–19th-century buildings, cafés and the “Museum Quarter,” which hosts branches of the State Historical Museum, Yasnaya Polyana, the Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts, and the Kulikovo Field research center.
What else to see
On the far bank of the Upa, in Zarechye, rises the famous “helmet” — the building of the State Museum of Weapons. Nearby, inside the workshops of a working factory, sits Oktava, a creative cluster with a Machine Tool Museum, lecture halls and workshops.
You can finish the day with a walk in Belousov Central Park, at the southern end of Lenin Avenue.

If you want a taste of history beyond the city, head to Yasnaya Polyana. It lies just 14 km from Tula: you can get there by bus No. 114, 117 or 280, or by taxi. The taxi ride runs about 500 ₽.

When to go to Tula: weather and seasons
- Summer (June–August): a steady +23 °C. This is an ideal time for walks along the embankment, boating and relaxing on summer terraces.
- Shoulder season (May and September): temperatures hold around +17 °C, and there are fewer tourists. These conditions suit both museum visits and trips to Yasnaya Polyana.
- Winter: temperatures around −4 °C, dropping to −12 °C at night. The city transforms: gingerbread fairs open, and the main Tula Christmas tree is lit on Lenin Square.
A tip for travelers: if you plan to visit Kulikovo Field, set aside a separate day for it. The drive via Bogoroditsk takes about two hours each way.

Most visitors choose the Tsentralny district — Sovetskaya Street, Lenin Avenue and pedestrian Metallistov. From there it is a 5–15 minute walk to the Kremlin and the Kazanskaya embankment, and this is where the upper-category hotels are concentrated. For a business trip or a budget stay, the blocks by Moskovsky station and the Proletarsky district along Kutuzova Street work well.
The range is wide: the cheapest are plain two- and three-star hotels in residential districts and small apartments, the most expensive are upper-category hotels by the Kremlin. 14 km south of Tula, right by the entrance to the estate museum, there is a four-star park hotel with its own grounds and a restaurant serving regional cuisine — the closest option to Tolstoy. If the trip also includes a walk around Tula, it is more convenient to stay in the city center: the estate is half an hour away by car.
If you are driving the M2 and would rather not turn off into the city, choose the park hotels right on the highway: they have an easy exit, a restaurant and forest around them. Moscow is about three hours away, central Tula half an hour. The alternative is a night in Shchekino or another town in Tula Oblast along the route.
