Best hotels in Derbent for summer

Derbent's old town is quite compact: it is only 500–800 meters from the 8th-century Juma Mosque to the Naryn-Kala citadel. A walk through the Magal quarters leads you straight to the fortress gates. If you leave the car at a hotel in this area, you can enjoy a morning stroll without taxis and without the coastal traffic.

Staying here has clear upsides: you get immersed in the atmosphere of a UNESCO site and live next to all the main landmarks of historic Derbent. There are downsides too: the lanes here are narrow and parking can be tricky. Sometimes you have to look for a spot in the neighboring quarters.

The Magals and the streets around them have accommodation for every budget:

• Drevniy Darband — a four-star hotel on Geydara Alieva Street, right by the fortress walls. From 6,000 ₽ per night.
• Staryy Gorod Derbent — a four-star hotel on Pushkina Street. It is the most affordable option in this category near the citadel. From 5,967 ₽.
• Russo Turisto — a three-star hotel on Gyrkhlar-Kapy Street, just steps from the citadel walls. From 2,900 ₽.
• Khalachi — the cheapest three-star hotel near the center. Rates start from 2,000 ₽. A solid alternative to commuting from Makhachkala (130 km each way).

Khandadasha Tagieva Street and the adjoining Severny district are home to a cluster of new four-star hotels, including Metropol and Sanitas Medical Resort & SPA. Derbent's other 4-star hotels sit in the center and the old town. This district is the northern entrance to Derbent from the Makhachkala side. It is 2–6 kilometers from here to the Juma Mosque and to the city beach on Kosa. The location works well for road-trippers: the streets are wider than in the old town, parking is easier, and the distances to the fortress and to the sea are roughly the same.

• Metropol — a four-star hotel at 33V/1 Kh. Tagieva Street. From 6,500 ₽ per night. A classic city-hotel format not far from the center.
• Sanitas Medical Resort & SPA — a four-star medical spa resort on Stroitelnaya Street. Rates start from 9,600 ₽. The hotel offers medical programs and relaxation stays, and works well for wellness trips.

Historic Derbent, unfortunately, is not ideal for a beach holiday. The shoreline by the old town is rocky and taken up by port infrastructure. To enjoy the sea, you need to head out from the center.

There are two options for a beach stay. The first is the Kosa microdistrict, roughly 6 kilometers to the north. It has a public sandy beach and a private-sector area, and the vibe is quieter than in the center. The second is the villages of Khazar and Avadan south of Derbent: Khazar is about 3.5 kilometers out, Avadan about 15. This is already almost the countryside, and the properties there follow a "seaside resort" format.

• Admiral — a three-star hotel on Pribrezhnaya Street in the Kosa microdistrict. From 3,500 ₽ per night. It is the closest option to the city beach.
• Ramina Derbent Resort — a four-star hotel on the first coastline in the village of Avadan. From 11,900 ₽. A full-fledged resort: it has its own beach, a pool, and a kitchen on site.

The most affordable category is 3 stars. The Khalachi hotel near the center, for example, starts from 2,000 ₽. Rates at two-star hotels are higher than at three-star ones simply because the city has only a couple of two-star properties.
