It depends on the trip you have in mind. If the Naryn-Kala citadel, the Juma Mosque and walks through the Magals are the main draw, choose the old town and the centre: everything is within walking distance. If you want to combine history with swimming, look at the northern approach along Khandadash Tagiev Street — the fortress and the city beach are about the same distance from there. If the sea and quiet come first, settle in the Kosa district to the north or in the villages of Khazar and Avadan south of the city.

The historic part of the city is rewarding year-round — the fortress and the magals are just as good in winter. The swimming season on the Caspian lasts roughly from mid-June through September; in July and August the water warms to +24…+26 °C. Demand peaks in midsummer, which is why many travellers pick the shoulder season: September and October are still warm, the sea is fine for swimming, and accommodation is noticeably more affordable.

A local quirk: the city has almost no two-star hotels, and by price they are no cheaper than three-star places. The nearest airport is Uytash in Makhachkala, about a hundred kilometres away on the R-217 highway. There is also the "Derbent" railway station on the Moscow — Makhachkala line, which is convenient for anyone coming from the southern regions or from Makhachkala itself.
