Nightly guesthouse stays in Makhachkala

The city stretches along the Caspian shore for several dozen kilometers. So when choosing a place to stay, the main question for a traveler is not so much the hotel's star rating as the location. It determines how far you'll have to walk to the Juma Mosque, how quickly you can reach the embankment, and whether you should keep a car handy for trips out of town.

In the center — near the Juma Mosque and Rasul Gamzatov Avenue

This is the old core of the city: Rasul Gamzatov Avenue, Buinakskogo Street, Imam Shamil Street, the central markets, and the bakeries with hot chudu. From here you can walk to the Central Juma Mosque and Rodopski Boulevard. Nearby are cafés serving khinkal and kurze, and in the evening it's pleasant to stroll across the square.

On Petra I Avenue and near Ak-Gol Lake

This district sits in the southeastern part of the city, closest to the Caspian. One of the main thoroughfares runs through it, Ak-Gol Park with its namesake lake spreads out here, and there's a short way down to the embankment. Unlike the noisy center, the atmosphere is calmer. The area is better suited for walks by the water, especially in the evening, when cafés with terraces open along the lake.

Karaman and the northern exit toward the Sulak Canyon

The new neighborhoods of Karaman-5 and Karaman-7 sit on the federal highway heading toward the Sulak Canyon and the Sarykum Dune. They suit travelers with a car who plan trips north of the city. Stay here and you save half an hour on the drive to the canyon and the dune, and you won't have to push back through downtown traffic every evening.

• Guest House No. 1 — in the same neighborhood, from 4 400 ₽. A solid option for a family or a small group.

From central Makhachkala it's about 80 km north along the highway to the Sulak Canyon, and about 30 km to the Sarykum Dune. If you're planning two trips over two days, it makes sense to settle closer to the city exit or right next to one of the natural landmarks. That way you save time in the morning — every kilometer covered in advance counts.
