Izborsk, with its fortress and the Slovenian Springs, lies about 30 km from town. Pechory, with the Pskov-Caves Monastery, is 50 km away, and the Pushkin Hills and Mikhailovskoye are 110 km out. All these spots can be visited in a single day. The intercity bus to Pechory takes about an hour, and to Izborsk 30–40 minutes.
Where to stay depends on the shape of your trip. If you plan to spend 2–3 nights in the region and want to see the Krom in the morning and head to Pechory in the afternoon, stay in Pskov — for example, in the Okolny Gorod.
If, on the other hand, you have set aside a day or two for the monastery and don't want to lose time on the road, it's better to stay in Pechory.
