Historic Rostov is the right bank: Bolshaya Sadovaya with its 19th-century merchant mansions, Soborny Lane, Gorky Park and the slope down to the embankment. Stay in the grid between Bolshaya Sadovaya and Sotsialisticheskaya if you want to cover the museums, the market and the main streets on foot, without taxis or bridges. Chain four-star buildings sit here alongside small hotels on quiet side streets, so you can pick for a business trip just as easily as for a first look at the city.
Beregovaya Street runs along the water for the full length of the center, and what the places here are really selling is the view — the Don and the left bank, with the cathedral domes in the distance. It's an equally short hop up Teatralny Spusk to Bolshaya Sadovaya and down to the river cruises and summer terraces right below the windows. The formats vary, from front-line hotel buildings to apartments in new blocks by the water; the latter work out better if you're traveling as a group or staying longer than a couple of nights. Bear in mind that in summer the embankment stays noisy late into the night, so light sleepers should ask for a room facing the courtyard.
Locals call the left bank Levberdon: Levoberezhnaya Street is lined with restaurants on stilts, banquet halls and hotels whose kitchens run like full city restaurants in the evening. People come for Don river fish, weddings and the view of the right bank rather than for walking — the center is ten minutes away by car over the Voroshilovsky Bridge, and it's not a walkable distance. There are fewer hotels here than on the right bank, but they're more intimate, nearly all of them face the water, and many keep their own spa or pier.
The forty-five-thousand-seat stadium stands on the left bank next to the Rowing Canal, and a quarter of new-build blocks has grown up around it, along Borisa Slyusarya and Levoberezhnaya streets. From those buildings it's a ten- to fifteen-minute walk to the stands, which on match day counts for more than any other advantage: the bridges over the Don seize up well in advance. The choice splits in two — a chain business hotel if the match is tacked onto a work trip, and apartments in residential complexes if you've come with a group of fans. Book as soon as the fixture list is announced: rooms near the arena go long before kickoff.
Business Rostov has moved from Bolshaya Sadovaya to Mikhaila Nagibina Avenue: this is where the exhibition center, the large shopping complexes and the congress hotels with halls for several hundred people are. Such properties are convenient because the meeting room, the restaurant and the parking are all in one building, with the center twenty minutes away by public transport. If your conference is downtown, there are options with halls and business services there too. Plan your booking ahead around major trade shows and matches — the city fills up completely on those dates.
Severny, the residential area along Lenina and Mikhaila Nagibina avenues, is where the city's lowest rates hold and where you'll find the most apartment-style rooms with a kitchen. People choose the district for a long work trip, and also for an overnight stop on the way to the Black Sea: the exit onto the highway is quick and parking is almost always on site and free. There's nowhere to stroll here and the historic center is a twenty- to thirty-minute ride away, so it works when you need a room purely for sleeping and working.
Beyond the city limits and on Rostov's far edges stand properties of a different genre: green grounds, a pool, a sauna or a full banya complex, a restaurant on site and quiet instead of avenues. The format is built for a weekend for two, a family break or a private event rather than sightseeing — getting there without a car is awkward. The best season runs from May to September, when the outdoor pools and terraces open; in winter these hotels live off their banyas and banquets.
Platov opened in the Shchepkinskoye rural settlement, some thirty kilometers from central Rostov — it's a separate hub on the highway, not a city district. Sleeping nearby makes sense in two cases: a very early departure or a short connection, when the trip into the city and back costs more time than a night next to the terminal. There aren't many options at the terminal itself, so look at hotels in Aksay and the neighboring villages along the road as well. In every other case it's easier to stay in the city: an express bus runs to the airport, and a taxi gets there in forty to sixty minutes.
It depends on why you're coming. For walking, museums and shopping, take the right bank — the grid between Bolshaya Sadovaya and the embankment, where everything is within walking distance. For a match at Rostov Arena, a banquet or a dinner of Don cuisine, Levoberezhnaya makes more sense. A long work trip or a stopover on the way south is cheaper in Severny, and for an early connection, stay near Platov.
The right bank is the historic city: the main streets, the museums, the railway station, the congress venues and most of the chain hotels. The left bank, Levberdon, is the dining and entertainment cluster, with restaurants by the water, the Rowing Canal and the stadium; there are fewer hotels there, but almost all of them look out onto the Don. If you've come to see Rostov, choose the right bank; if there's a dinner, a banquet or a match on the schedule, the left.

The cheapest segment is apartment-style rooms and small hotels in Severny and the outlying residential areas; the middle is three- and four-star hotels in the center; the top end is the spa retreats on the left bank and the five-star properties near the embankment. Rates climb noticeably on match days at Rostov Arena and during major trade shows, and in the warm season, when traffic to the Black Sea passes through the city.
The closest places to the stadium are on Borisa Slyusarya and Levoberezhnaya streets — from there you can walk to the stands instead of sitting in traffic on the bridges. Fans on a tight budget will do well in small hotels and apartments in the residential complexes by the arena; anyone combining the game with work should look at a chain business hotel; and for celebrating after the final whistle there are spa hotels and boutique properties on Levoberezhnaya.
