Rostov-on-Don
Rostov-on-Don stretches along the high right bank of the Don River. The city greets visitors with the imperial Bolshaya Sadovaya Street lined with old merchant mansions and a lively two-kilometer embankment with river piers. Cross the Voroshilovsky Bridge and you find yourself on Levberdon — a recreation area with floating restaurants and Don crayfish. In summer, Rostov turns into the hot river capital of the south, and in September it becomes a cozy weekend destination as the city celebrates its birthday with bustling fairs. In two days you can stroll through the center, spend an evening by the Don, and take a day trip to Tanais or Starocherkasskaya.
From Bolshaya Sadovaya to Levberdon: Two Banks in a Day
The best way to get to know Rostov is to start on Bolshaya Sadovaya. Walk from Theater Square to Voroshilovsky Avenue: late 19th-century mansions have been preserved here, and the local history museum and Gorky Park with its observatory are open. If you happen to be in the park on a Sunday between 8:00 and 14:00, stop by the “Herons” fountain — a colorful flea market unfolds there.
Just a 15-minute walk away stands the majestic Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built to a design by Konstantin Ton in 1860. Nearby, Cathedral Square and the Old Bazaar bustle with life — the best place to try Don fish, southern fruit, and homemade cheeses.
By evening, head down to the Fyodor Ushakov Embankment. It’s a pleasant spot to take in the “Rostovchanka” and “Don-Batyushka” sculptures, watch the river boats, and relax by the fountains.
If you have time to spare, drop into Nakhichevan — a district with a unique layout and a grid of “lines.” And if you’re interested in history, it’s worth traveling to the Armenian Surb Khach Church (1786). It sits 7 km north of the center, on the shore of the Northern Reservoir.
The final stop on the route is Levberdon. Cross the Voroshilovsky Bridge to reach the left bank of the Don. This is a ten-kilometer stretch of beaches, resort bases, and waterfront restaurants serving crayfish, fish soup, and Don pike-perch. Here, too, rises the “Rostov Arena” — the home stadium of FC Rostov.
There is almost no public transport in this part of the city, so it is most convenient to get here by taxi (350 ₽) or private car. If you want to stay by the water, consider the Avangard Hotel on Levoberezhnaya Street. Rates start from 6,800 ₽. Avangard Hotel.
When to Go: Hot July and Velvet September
When it’s best to visit
- July and August: the season of Levberdon, river cruises, and evening terraces. During the day the thermometer climbs to +33 °C, and at night it drops to +19…+20 °C. In the midday heat, it’s best to plan museum visits.
- September: the ideal “velvet” season. The weather stays dry and warm (around +26 °C). On the third weekend of the month the city celebrates Rostov Day — with large-scale fairs and street concerts.
- October: the temperature holds around +18 °C. This is the best time for trips around the region: it’s worth visiting the fortress in Azov or the Tanais archaeological museum reserve.
- Winter: mild with little snow. In January the average temperature is −2…−3 °C. Snow tends to fall closer to the New Year, but rarely lingers longer than three weeks.

Frequently asked questions about Rostov-on-Don
It depends on why you're coming. For walking, museums and shopping, take the right bank — the grid between Bolshaya Sadovaya and the embankment, where everything is within walking distance. For a match at Rostov Arena, a banquet or a dinner of Don cuisine, Levoberezhnaya makes more sense. A long work trip or a stopover on the way south is cheaper in Severny, and for an early connection, stay near Platov.
The right bank is the historic city: the main streets, the museums, the railway station, the congress venues and most of the chain hotels. The left bank, Levberdon, is the dining and entertainment cluster, with restaurants by the water, the Rowing Canal and the stadium; there are fewer hotels there, but almost all of them look out onto the Don. If you've come to see Rostov, choose the right bank; if there's a dinner, a banquet or a match on the schedule, the left.
The range across the city is wide. The cheapest segment is apartment-style rooms and small hotels in Severny and the outlying residential areas; the middle is three- and four-star hotels in the center; the top end is the spa retreats on the left bank and the five-star properties near the embankment. Rates climb noticeably on match days at Rostov Arena and during major trade shows, and in the warm season, when traffic to the Black Sea passes through the city.
The closest places to the stadium are on Borisa Slyusarya and Levoberezhnaya streets — from there you can walk to the stands instead of sitting in traffic on the bridges. Fans on a tight budget will do well in small hotels and apartments in the residential complexes by the arena; anyone combining the game with work should look at a chain business hotel; and for celebrating after the final whistle there are spa hotels and boutique properties on Levoberezhnaya.
