Hotels in Sergiev Posad

Most visitors to Sergiev Posad stay in the ring of streets around Krasnogorskaya Square — Pionerskaya, Voznesenskaya, Kirova and Ovrazhny Lane. From here it is anywhere from a couple of minutes to a quarter of an hour on foot to the monastery's Holy Gates, no transport required, and almost everything on offer is guest houses and small two- and three-star hotels. It's the format for anyone coming for the Lavra for a night or two who wants to walk into the monastery in the morning, before the tour buses pull up.

If you are coming for a single night with no luggage, there is no reason to pay extra for the centre: the most economical formats in town are the hostel and small guest houses. Some sit in that same area, near Voznesenskaya and Ovrazhny Lane; others are half an hour's walk away on Glinki and around Rybnaya, where it is quieter and noticeably cheaper than the tourist streets. Don't expect a front desk or breakfast here, but for one night between the evening service and an early liturgy it is enough.

If the trip stretches to three to five nights — a work trip, a family visit, an unhurried look around the area — turn to the northern part of town: Inzhenernaya, Vladimirskaya and Vorobyovskaya streets. The Lavra is a 20–30 minute walk or a five-minute drive from there, and in exchange it is quieter than Krasnogorskaya Square and cheaper than the tourist centre. The studios and apartments come with a kitchen, a washing machine and a parking space in the courtyard — on a longer stay that is what decides it.

The classic view of the whole ensemble with its golden domes opens up from Blinnaya Gora above Voznesenskaya Street — and some of the accommodation stands right on that hill. The reason to stay here is the morning: while the tour groups are still leaving Moscow, the viewing platform is empty and the domes catch the first light. The choice runs from a small hotel on the hill itself to new studios and apartments in a residential complex on the slope.

There are almost no four-star hotels inside the city limits — that role is taken on by the countryside complexes instead. The resort cluster in Peresvet, the manor-estate side of Abramtsevo and the club houses in Belikovo offer what the guest houses in the centre cannot: a pool, a spa, a pine park and a restaurant on the grounds. It makes sense to come by car and for at least two nights, so the Lavra becomes one day of the trip rather than its only purpose.

Torbeevo Lake, a few kilometres out of town, is the local story when it comes to time on the water: a beach, separate cabins, a banya and fishing. This is the format chosen by families with children and by anyone arriving by car — parking, rooms for three or four people, barbecue areas and forest instead of city noise. The weekend plans itself: morning at the monastery, afternoon by the water.

There are no five-star hotels in Sergiev Posad at all, so the premium end within the city is held by small boutique hotels and comfortable places with a restaurant. Look for them by Kelarsky Pond and on Kooperativnaya and Bazunova — quiet addresses within walking distance of the Lavra, or a very short ride from it. A good option if you have come out of Moscow for the weekend and want a proper breakfast, parking and a calm evening after sightseeing.
