April and May are the best months. The city changes as early as late March: the almond trees and the orchards come into bloom, and by May it is genuinely warm but still without the summer mugginess. July and August are the hottest and most expensive months, while September and October bring back comfortable weather for walking.
If you have come for the city and its museums, choose the Central district: the Tavrida Central Museum, the Ethnographic Museum and the main squares are all within walking distance. If Simferopol is a stopover on the way to the sea, the Zheleznodorozhny district makes more sense — the railway station is right there, with transport leaving for Yalta, Sevastopol and Yevpatoria. With a late arrival or an early departure it is worth skipping the city altogether and spending the night near the airport.
The range is wide: the most affordable options are hostel beds and simple mini-hotels on the outskirts, the middle segment covers three-star city hotels and apartments rented by the night, and the top end is four-star hotels and boutique properties in the center. July and August are the priciest, when the main flow of travelers to the sea passes through the city; in spring and fall prices are noticeably gentler.
Alushta is about an hour away, Yalta roughly an hour and a half by taxi and longer by minibus, Sevastopol an hour and a half along the Tavrida highway, and Yevpatoria one to one and a half hours. That is exactly why Simferopol is more often used as a base for a single night than for a full holiday.
Start with the Tavrida Central Museum and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in the center, then look in at Kebir-Jami — the oldest mosque in Crimea — and the Karaite Kenassa. If you still have time, drive out to the Scythian Neapolis museum reserve on the site of the ancient settlement and to the Bagrov Botanical Garden with the estate of Academician Pallas.
