Hotels in Sukko

There are only a handful of large four-star hotels in the valley, and all of them run on an all-inclusive basis: the buffet, pool, spa and evening entertainment come with the room, so you could go a week without leaving the grounds. Families tend to choose this format when they want a holiday sorted end to end, with no daily decisions about where to eat or how to keep a child busy. These hotels sit in different parts of the village — from the streets around 2nd Proezd, closer to the sea, to the vineyards on the outskirts, where it is quietest of all. For July and August, rooms go well in advance.

The beach in Sukko is pebble and lies about a kilometre from the main street, so the private houses in the southern part of the village are positioned to put the water within a 10–15 minute walk. Inside, everything is kept simple: a room with a bathroom, a kettle, parking in the yard, sometimes a shared kitchen and a barbecue — meals and days out are yours to plan. This suits travellers who come for the sea and the foothills and would rather not pay extra for entertainment programmes and a buffet.

The most affordable options in the village are furnished rooms and small private houses around Yuganskoye Koltso and the neighbouring lanes, a couple of minutes from the centre where the excursion buses depart. Don't expect anything fancy here, but shops and cafés are close by, and both the beach and Cypress Lake are an easy walk away. Rates work out best in early June and in September, when the water is still warm and the village is no longer packed to the brim.

The sea off Sukko drops away quickly and the shore is pebble, so with small children it is easier when there is a pool in the yard: during the day a child splashes about on site, and you head down to the sea in the morning and the evening. Houses like these stand in the middle of the valley, close to the cafés and the bus stop where buses leave for the Lion's Head castle and the African Village. Many accept pets and keep a barbecue area, so dinner can happen right in the yard.

Up the valley, towards Cypress Lake, the village thins out: instead of streets there are vineyards, juniper and plots with gardens, and the swamp cypresses growing straight out of the water are a few minutes away on foot or by taxi. People here more often rent a whole cottage or apartment — with a kitchen, a yard and a barbecue — which suits a group or a family staying for a longer stretch. The sea is further away than from the centre, but the evenings here are genuinely quiet.

The western edge of the village opens onto Utrishskaya road, beyond which the Bolshoy Utrish nature reserve begins, with its relict juniper, mountain trails and wild coves. People book in this part of Sukko when they come to walk as well as swim: you can set off on a route straight from the gate without spending the morning getting there. The best time for walks like these is May–June and September–October, when the valley is no longer hot.

If pebbles and a sharp drop-off don't suit your children, a sensible compromise is to stay in Vityazevo: it has a wide sandy beach and a gentle entry into the water, and Sukko is about half an hour away along the highway by car. Accommodation runs along Pionersky Prospekt and closer to the sea, among cafés, water parks and rental shops. This arrangement makes sense when the main point of the trip is easy swimming with little ones, while the valley, the castle and Cypress Lake are covered in a single day.

About twelve kilometres and half an hour on a marshrutka separate Sukko from Anapa, so you can make the city your base and travel into the valley for the quiet, the juniper and the knights' tournaments. People stay closer to the water for the promenade and the sandy beaches, while the blocks further back are calmer — there you more often find properties with a garden and their own parking. This works well if you fly into Vityazevo or arrive by train: both the airport and the station are a short ride away.
