Kazan

The first thing that sticks in your memory in Kazan is the white Kul-Sharif Mosque and the Annunciation Cathedral, standing on the same hill. From the Kremlin it is an easy walk to the Old Tatar Quarter, a leisurely stroll along Bauman pedestrian street and the Kremlin Embankment. And in the evening, guests of the city sit down at the table to try echpochmak and chak-chak. Compact, warm, and hearty — that is how Kazan is remembered, and that is exactly what people come here for.

The Pedestrian Center: From the Kremlin to Lake Kaban

The Kazan Kremlin is the only surviving Tatar site on the UNESCO list, where it was inscribed in 2000. Within its white stone walls stand the Kul-Sharif Mosque (built in 2005) and the Annunciation Cathedral (erected in 1561 by masters from Pskov).

From the southern gates, Bauman Street runs downhill — almost two kilometers of cobblestone pedestrian street. Here you can come across street musicians and see a replica of Catherine II’s carriage. Further on lies the Kremlin Embankment: it stretches for a kilometer and a half along the Kazanka River — all the way to the “Chasha” wedding palace and the Ak Bars Arena.

A fifteen-minute walk south of the center, the Old Tatar Quarter spreads out by Lower Kaban Lake. Here you will see colorful 19th-century merchant houses, the Al-Marjani Mosque (built in 1766), and a wealth of places to eat. For echpochmak and azu, drop by “Tatarskaya Usadba” on Marjani Street, and for dessert — the “Chak-Chak Museum” on Parizhskoy Kommuny Street.

The Moya Bron catalog currently lists 528 hotels in Kazan: from Irbis (from 5,500 ₽ per night) to Ramada by Wyndham Kazan City Centre (from 10,200 ₽ per night) near the Kremlin.

When to Go: Sabantuy in Summer, Skating in Winter

The high season runs from May to September. Daytime temperatures stay around +22 to +25 °C. At this time the Volga comes to life, river navigation reopens, and outdoor terraces and pleasure boats start running.

The main event of the season is Sabantuy, held in June. As always, guests can watch koresh wrestling and horse races at the hippodrome. From mid-July to mid-August there is a short swimming season on the Volga.

In winter, one of the longest ice rinks in Europe — about a kilometer long — opens on the Kremlin Embankment. The Tatneft Arena hosts hockey matches. Fans cheer for Ak Bars, and in the evenings they admire the illuminated Kremlin.

January is cold: the daytime temperature averages around −6 °C, and at night it can drop to −12 °C. Even so, the city center is small, and you will not have time to freeze.

April and October are appealing for their lower prices and the absence of crowds at the Kul-Sharif Mosque. The weather in these months is rather capricious, but it often brings pleasant, warm days.

Frequently asked questions about Kazan

If the trip is short and you have no car, choose the Vakhitovsky District, between the Kremlin and Tukay Square: almost everything people come to Kazan for is within walking distance. Anyone looking for quiet and local color will be happy in the Old Tatar Quarter by Lake Kaban, while fans of panoramas and sporting events should look at the Novo-Savinovsky District across the Kazanka.

The best combination of price and weather comes in the shoulder seasons, April and October: there are fewer tourists and it is still comfortable to walk around the center. Peak demand falls on Sabantuy in late June, Republic Day on August 30, the New Year holidays and big matches at Ak Bars Arena — on those dates rooms are taken two to three weeks in advance. If your dates are flexible, compare weekdays with weekends: in the center the difference is noticeable.

The range is wide, and it depends above all on the district and the category. The most affordable options are simple hotels and hostels on the outskirts; the middle segment is three-star properties and small boutique hotels in the center; the top end is premium hotels by the Kremlin and country resorts. During holidays and major events rates run noticeably above the base level, so it is better to book ahead.

For water fun and long walks the Novo-Savinovsky District is more convenient: the water park, Victory Park and the Kazanka embankment are all nearby. If the city itself matters more to you — the Kremlin, Kul Sharif, the Ekiyat puppet theater and Bauman Street — choose the center: it is easier there for families without a car, because restaurants, pharmacies and grocery stores are close at hand and you hardly need a taxi.

Many of them offer a halal breakfast menu and set aside prayer rooms — part of the local tradition of hospitality. Reception staff usually speak Russian, English and Tatar, and price lists often include ready-made packages such as "room + a tour to Sviyazhsk" or "room + a match at Ak Bars Arena", which saves a weekend visitor time.
