Makhachkala

Makhachkala

Makhachkala is a convenient base for travel around Dagestan. Here you can combine a beach holiday with rich sightseeing: swim in the Caspian in the morning and by lunchtime already admire the Sulak Canyon, the Sarykum dune, or stroll through ancient Derbent. Between trips, it's worth taking a walk along Rasul Gamzatov Avenue, stopping by the majestic Juma Mosque, and visiting the Second Market for local urbech and fragrant spices. The city offers excellent infrastructure: more than 90 hotels with prices starting from 2,000 ₽ per night, and it takes no more than an hour and a half to two hours to reach the airport or the main natural attractions.

A Walk Through the City Center

This walking route takes an hour and a half to two hours.

  • Start at Lenin Square. From there, turn toward the Central Juma Mosque — the largest in the city.
  • Then head to the pedestrian section of Rasul Gamzatov Avenue — a paved promenade with wrought-iron lanterns and coffee shops. Along the way you’ll see monuments to Pushkin, Rasul Gamzatov, Yusup Akayev, as well as busts of Peter I and Gamzat Tsadasa.
  • The final point of the route is Rodopsky Boulevard. This is 800 meters of greenery between the Salavatov Kumyk Theater and the Avar Drama Theater. Although the boulevard is separated from the sea by a railway, it takes just 10–15 minutes on foot to reach the city beach from here. A kilometer-long strip of sand with free 24-hour access awaits you.

What to Try and Buy

  • Markets: the Second Market deserves a separate visit. Go there for local specialties: urbech (made from flax or apricot kernel), fragrant spices, homemade cheeses, and carpets.
  • Gastronomy: for lunch, drop by “Papakha” (Gamzatov Avenue) or “Maidat” (Dakhadaev Street). Try khinkal with garlic sauce, chudu with pumpkin, and kurze with the signature braided seam.

If you plan to visit museums and the mosque, choose a hotel in the city center. If you’d rather be closer to the sea and Ak-Gel Lake, look for accommodation along the coast. The full list of Makhachkala hotels is in the Makhachkala hotels catalog.

Dagestan in One Day

Makhachkala is an ideal hub for traveling around the region.

Sulak Canyon. Just 1.5 hours away — and you’re at one of the deepest canyons in the world (more than 1,900 meters). Here you can admire turquoise water and take a boat ride along the Sulak River.

Sarykum Dune. The largest sand dune in Europe and Eurasia, which served as the backdrop for the film “White Sun of the Desert.” Tip: group tours to these locations depart from the Southern Bus Station, with prices starting from 3,350 ₽.

Derbent. You can reach Russia’s oldest city in two hours by train. The main attraction is the Naryn-Kala Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Trips to Gunib and Kubachi require two to three days — a separate itinerary is planned for them.

When to Go

The best time to combine a beach holiday with a mountain trip is late May to mid-July, as well as the second half of August through September. By July, the sea warms up to +24…+27 °C, and it’s not yet too hot in the mountains. In summer, accommodation prices are roughly twice as high as in winter.

Frequently asked questions about Makhachkala

In the northern districts of Karaman-5 and Karaman-7, along Federalnoye Shosse, or in the village of Tyube right at the foot of the dune. It is about 80 km from the city center to the canyon, and setting off from the northern edge of town cuts a noticeable amount off the morning drive. Staying by the dune itself works both as a one-night stop and as a full base for two trips.

The most affordable segment is unrated mini-hotels and two-star properties; above them come three- and four-star city hotels, and the top of the range belongs to the resort complexes on the coast. What is unusual about Makhachkala is how small the gap between categories is: the five-star hotel by Ak-Gel competes on price with three-star places in the center. In summer, at the peak of the beach season, accommodation outside the city by the sea is the most expensive of all.

Within the city limits there are few hotels with a beach within walking distance, and the city beach is better suited to a stroll than to a resort holiday. For the sea proper — with a pool, a spa and a beachfront location — people head out of town: to Manaskent and the villages to the south, to Kaspiysk, and to the northern shore toward Sulak.

Families and groups traveling by car usually find the northern edge of town more convenient — the Karaman districts and Federalnoye Shosse: parking is easier there, the highway is quicker to reach and the natural sights are much closer. In the city itself, guest houses and apartments with separate bedrooms and a gated courtyard are a sensible alternative.

The Central Juma Mosque and the old quarters around Rasul Gamzatov Avenue, the Caspian seafront and Ak-Gel Park with its lake. One day is worth giving over to a trip out of town: the Sarykum Dune about 30 km from the center and the Sulak Canyon about 80 km up the highway to the north.
