Pyatigorsk
Pyatigorsk is a place where every kind of getaway comes together in a single city. Here you can restore your health at balneological spas, wander through Lermontov's outdoor haunts, or ride the cable car to the summit of Mashuk (993 m), which opens up a panorama of five mountains. The resort area is very compact: all the main sights, including Tsvetnik Park, are within walking distance. Mashuk, Tsvetnik Park, and the Lermontov Trail
The main walking axis of Pyatigorsk is Kirova Avenue. It begins at the railway station and leads to Tsvetnik Park, which was laid out back in 1828. Along the way you’ll pass sanatoriums with their own pump rooms, fountains, coffee shops, and the glass Lermontov Gallery built in 1901.
From Tsvetnik Park, the paths branch in two directions: one route leads to the Aeolian Harp — a white rotunda from 1831 with eight Doric columns — the other to the Lermontov Grotto.
For a view of the city from above, head to the foot of Mount Mashuk. The cable car will take you to the top in just three minutes. From there, a panorama of the five-peaked Beshtau opens up. The city takes its name from this very mountain.
On the southeastern slope of Mashuk, the bright turquoise Proval Lake hides away, and next door lie the “shameless baths” — natural travertine pools with healing hydrogen sulfide water.
A separate trail leads to the site of Mikhail Lermontov’s duel, which took place on 15 July 1841. There, among the birch trees, a memorial obelisk has stood since 1915.
Tip: the most convenient way to get around between the sights is by tram. It has been running on a narrow “meter-gauge” track since 1903. Fare: 30 ₽ (until 1 July 2026), then 35 ₽.
When to Go and Where to Head Around the Caucasian Mineral Waters
The season in Pyatigorsk runs from May to October, though the city is lovely at any time of year.
- Velvet season (September–October): the most comfortable time to visit. September brings a pleasant +20…+23 °C; October cools down to +13…+15 °C. Rainfall is light. The city celebrates its birthday on the second weekend of September.
- Summer is hot: in July and August daytime temperatures reach +28…+30 °C. If you plan to climb Mashuk or Beshtau, morning is the better choice.
- Shoulder season and holidays: in April Tsvetnik Park comes alive for the tulip festival, and in late November the city hosts the Open Jazz Music Festival.
- Winter is mild and quiet: in December the thermometer holds at +3…+6 °C, in January and February it’s 0…–2 °C. This is a good time for a sanatorium stay.
