Just an hour on a Sapsan train from Leningradsky Station and you're in Tver. The train will bring you to a city that Catherine II turned into a "little Petersburg" after the fire of 1763, laying out a regular grid of streets. The heart of the city is its two embankments along the Volga. For a short walk, take the route from the Imperial Travel Palace to the Old Volga Bridge. And if you decide to stay for the whole weekend, drop by neighboring Torzhok and Staritsa or head to Lake Seliger.
Three Radiating Streets and the Embankments: A One-Day Itinerary
From Mikhail Tverskoy Square, three main streets fan out like rays from the Admiralty in St. Petersburg: Sovetskaya, Novotorzhskaya and Volnogo Novgoroda. That’s where we’ll begin our acquaintance with the city.
A walk through the center
- Sovetskaya Street: head along it toward the equestrian monument to Mikhail Tverskoy and the Imperial Travel Palace (1764–1766). Today its walls house the Tver Regional Art Gallery.
- Stepan Razin Embankment: walk through the City Garden with its Ferris wheel — you’ll come out at the Volga. Here you’ll find a “continuous facade” that’s rare for Russia: the 18th-century development follows the strict canons of classicism.
- Zavolzhye (across the Volga): cross the Volga on the openwork Old Volga Bridge (1900). On the other bank, a monument to Afanasy Nikitin awaits you. It was from here in 1468 that the merchant set out on his “Journey Beyond Three Seas” and became one of the first Europeans to reach India.
- The Tver Arbat: return to the center along pedestrian Tryokhsvyatskaya Street. On August 28, 1901, the city’s first electric tram was launched here — six years earlier than in St. Petersburg.
Volga Season and Where to Stay Downtown
When to go
- June and August: an all-purpose time for a trip. The weather is warm and there’s no exhausting heat. You can take river cruises, and on the embankments you won’t need to hide from long downpours.
- July: the hottest and also the rainiest month. In mid-July, Tver celebrates its City Day — the climax of the festival is fireworks over the Island of Memory at 10 p.m.
- September: the time of “golden” autumn, when the City Garden and Tryokhsvyatskaya Street become especially photogenic.
- Winter: the Volga freezes over, ski trails are laid in Bobachyovskaya Grove and outdoor rinks are flooded.

Choose a place on Simeonovskaya, Novotorzhskaya, Tverskoy Prospekt or Velikogo Novgoroda Street — the palace and the Art Gallery are a 5–10 minute walk from there. The far side of the Volga works too: the palace is 10–15 minutes away across the Old Volga Bridge, and staying in that part of the city is usually more affordable.
The blocks by the station are the most convenient — Kominterna, Zheleznodorozhnikov and Alexandra Popova streets: you will reach your hotel on foot in a few minutes. The same area helps with an early connection and if you are heading out onto the M-11 in the morning.
There are no five-star hotels in the city. The premium end is represented by four-star hotels in the center and a handful of three-star ones with expensive interiors, their own restaurant and a spa.
Hostels, guest rooms and apartments in the residential districts work out cheapest, while the center and four-star hotels sit at the top; the Zavolzhsky and Moskovsky districts are consistently more affordable than the central streets.
