Ufa

Ufa

The capital of Bashkortostan sits at the confluence of three rivers: the Belaya, the Ufa and the Dyoma. Home to more than a million people, the city is known for its unusual four-tier embankment stretching 7 kilometres and for Russia's largest equestrian statue — a monument to Salavat Yulaev perched on the edge of a cliff. Over a weekend you can stroll through the historic centre with its Gostiny Dvor and drop into the northern district of Chernikovka, home to the Lyalya-Tulpan Mosque. If you can stay a couple of days longer, take a trip to the Pavlovskoye Reservoir and visit the Bashkir sanatoriums.

Two Ufas: the cliff above the Belaya and Stalin-era Chernikovka

Day one is best devoted to the historic centre. Start your walk at Verkhnetorgovaya Square and the 19th-century Gostiny Dvor, from where Lenin Street will lead you to Art-Kvadrat — a trendy cluster of bars, street food and a summer stage. The final point on the route is the city’s main viewpoint: the cliff above the Belaya River at the foot of the Salavat Yulaev monument. From the statue, unveiled in 1967, the famous “Thousand Steps” staircase runs down to the embankment. Summer is especially lively here: people paddleboard on the river, while locals stroll along the four-tier promenade.

Day two belongs to Chernikovka — a district 10–13 km to the north that feels like a separate city. It carries the atmosphere of the 1930s–50s: wide avenues and monumental Stalinist Empire-style buildings raised around giant factories. Drop by Victory Park with its panoramic view of the Belaya and visit the Lyalya-Tulpan Mosque, whose 53-metre minarets resemble opening tulip blossoms. Keep in mind that the trip one way takes about 40 minutes, and during rush hour it can drag on because of traffic.

When to go and where to venture

The comfortable season for a visit runs from May to September. In June the city celebrates Sabantuy, and the large-scale “Est! Fest” food festival takes place near Ufa-Arena. In winter life revolves around hockey: home games of Salavat Yulaev fill the stands, so tickets are worth booking in advance.
