Zelenogradsk
Zelenogradsk is a quiet Baltic resort. It sits 30 km from Kaliningrad and just four kilometres from the Curonian Spit. The former Prussian town of Cranz left behind the pedestrian Kurortny Prospekt, prewar villas, and a promenade stretching for kilometres with a free mineral-water pump room. You can walk from the railway station to the sea in about 15 minutes at an easy pace, and in the evening the seafront air fills with the scent of pines and smoked fish from the local market.
From the Station to the Sea Through Former Cranz
Kurortny Prospekt is a pedestrian street where late 19th- and early 20th-century villas (in the Fachwerk and Jugendstil styles) stand alongside modern coffee shops, marzipan boutiques, and murals with cats.
At a leisurely pace, the walk from the station to the pier takes about an hour. On the way, stop by the 1905 water tower: it now houses the Murarium cat museum. Thousands of cat figurines from around the world are gathered here, and the upper level offers a panoramic view of the town and the sea.
Beyond that, the seaside promenade begins. It is a multi-kilometre embankment with benches, gazebos, and easy descents to the sandy beach. At the intersection of the promenade and Alleya Druzhby, there is a pump room with free mineral water. The pump room operates from April to October.
Swimming in the Baltic Sea is comfortable only in July and August, when the water warms up to +18…+19 °C. In the other months the sea is cold, but the beach is not empty — people come here to walk and breathe the sea air.

A Day on the Curonian Spit
The southern checkpoint of the national park is located 4 km from the centre of Zelenogradsk. Entry costs 400 ₽ per person. To see the spit’s main highlights in a single day, we recommend the following route:
- The Royal Forest Trail — a walk through an ancient forest.
- The Dancing Forest — a mysterious spot with strangely twisted pines.
- Efa Height — one of the tallest dunes on the spit. From the viewing platforms, you can see the Baltic Sea on one side and the Curonian Lagoon on the other.
Along the way, it is worth stopping at the Fringilla field station. It has operated since 1957 as a division of the Rybachy biological station, and the German ornithological station Rossitten — the first in the world — was active on the same site from 1901. In summer, station staff run tours and demonstrate how migratory birds are ringed.
It takes about an hour to reach Morskoye, the settlement at the far end of the spit. Plan a full day of daylight for the whole trip.

The first regular commuter train leaves at 6:37, and the last one at around 21:39. It is about 15–20 km from Khrabrovo Airport to the town. The most convenient options are a taxi or a transfer.
Yes, it is worth it. Zelenogradsk is the closest resort to the southern entrance of the national park, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. A taxi to the checkpoint takes 10–15 minutes. Buses also run several times a day. You can combine a visit to the spit with a day or two of rest in Zelenogradsk itself.
Be sure to try dishes made with Baltic fish: smoked eel, herring, and pikeperch. You can buy them at the market or near the promenade. Cafés serving regional cuisine offer Königsberger Klopse — meatballs in a white sauce with capers. Marzipan can be purchased at specialty shops along Kurortny Prospekt.
