Hotels in Alushta

The town side of the resort is Lenina, Gorkogo and Oktyabrskaya streets, the seafront with its Rotunda and the central beach; from here it is a short walk to the Mindalnaya Roshcha water park, the Nemo dolphinarium and the remains of the Aluston fortress. In summer it gets crowded and noisy, but cafes, the market and the bus station — where trolleybuses leave for Simferopol and Yalta — are all close at hand. This is the choice for anyone who came for resort life rather than for quiet.

West of the Rotunda the seafront runs into Professorsky Ugolok, a beach district where hotels stand in the first and second row back from the water and the sea is a couple of minutes away on foot. It is calmer here than in the center: less through traffic and more greenery, though cafes and rental stands are still nearby. Several upmarket hotels share a single building on Naberezhnaya Street, so it is easiest to choose by how far back from the sea you are and by the view from the window.

In Utyos, on the road from Alushta to Partenit, a dozen buildings run by different operators share one address — the grounds of Princess Gagarina's former estate. Inside there is a common cypress park and a pebble beach of its own, the sea is a five-minute walk from any of the buildings, and what sets them apart is the state of the rooms, the category and the level of service, not the location. When you book, check the building number: satnav will bring you to the shared archway where the park begins, and it is easy to head the wrong way with your luggage.

Partenit is a separate village west of Alushta at the foot of Ayu-Dag, with the park of the Krym sanatorium, cypress alleys and a beach of its own. There is almost no resort noise here, which is why it draws families with children and older holidaymakers. Alushta's water park and dolphinarium are about twenty minutes away by bus, so the attractions stay within reach.

Families in Alushta look for places where the route to the beach runs through the property's own grounds rather than along a busy street: park areas, enclosed courtyards and a pool to splash in when the sea is rough. In the city itself the advantage is different — the Mindalnaya Roshcha water park and the Nemo dolphinarium are within walking distance — while among the quieter options parents more often choose Partenit and Professorsky Ugolok. The shore across Greater Alushta is pebble, so it is worth checking what the entry into the water is like at each particular beach.

Guest houses keep the lower end of the price range across the whole southern coast of Crimea: usually a low-rise house with a handful of rooms, no restaurant and no entertainment program, but with its own yard, a kitchen and a place to park. You will find them both in the center and in Professorsky Ugolok — most often five to ten minutes on foot from the sea or the seafront. It is a format for travelers who would rather not pay extra for sanatorium services and are happy to eat and spend their evenings in town.

East of the city the resort development runs out: beyond it come villages with rocky shores, scattered guest houses and half-wild coves such as Kanaka. Alushta is thirty to forty minutes away by car, but the Dzhur-Dzhur waterfall and the Demerdzhi valley are closer than they are from the city itself. People come here for the quiet and the empty beaches, and for entertainment or a wider choice of shops they have to drive into town.

Not all of the district faces the sea: in the foothills behind Alushta there are country estates and small hotels that make a convenient base for Demerdzhi with its Valley of Ghosts, the Marble Cave and the Dzhur-Dzhur waterfall. It is cooler here than on the coast, quieter and noticeably greener, and the city beaches are a short drive or trolleybus ride away along the mountain road. A good choice for May and June or September and October, when walking in the mountains is more comfortable than lying on pebbles.
