Alushta

Alushta

Travelers choose Alushta when they want to enjoy the Crimean sea without the Yalta crowds and stand next to the mountains right by the beach. The town sits in an intermontane basin between Chatyr-Dag and Demerdzhi, so the air here is drier and better ventilated than on the western part of Crimea's southern coast. In a single day you can take a morning swim at the town beach, lunch on chebureki along the seafront, and watch the sunset in the Valley of Ghosts.

The Seafront and Professor’s Corner

The main promenade runs from the center to Primorsky Park. Along the way you’ll find Lenina and Gorkogo streets with cafes and souvenir shops, the town beach, the Nemo dolphinarium, and the “Crimea in Miniature” park at a 1:25 scale. The White Rotunda bearing the inscription “Alushta-Resort” — a symbol of the town since 1951 — stood right by the water until spring 2026, when it was dismantled for restoration.

Westward, at the foot of Mount Kastel (439 m), lies Professor’s Corner — a former dacha settlement of Russian professors from the late 19th century. Here you’ll find the longest concrete seafront in Crimea — 7 kilometers paved with multicolored stone. The rhythm is that of a sanatorium: a wide beach, a shady park, and the dacha-museum of the writer Sergeyev-Tsensky. Of the 52 hotels in Alushta, guests in the center often choose Moskva on Gorkogo Street from 4,500 ₽ per night, while near Primorsky Park there’s Usadba Primorsky Park with a 9.6 rating.

Seasons and a “Second Program” in the Mountains

The beach season starts in mid-June: by then the water warms up to +22–24 °C. In July and August the sea temperature stays at +24–26 °C, and the seafront grows crowded. The velvet season runs from late August into September — an excellent time to combine swimming with walks: the water is still warm (+22–23 °C), and the mountains are no longer stifling.

The second half of Alushta’s attractions lies beyond the town. On the western slope of Demerdzhi spreads the Valley of Ghosts — a 20-hectare area with stone pillars up to 25 meters tall. This is where “Kidnapping, Caucasian Style” was filmed. To the east, in the Khapkhal Nature Reserve near the village of Generalskoye, stands the Dzhur-Dzhur waterfall — the most full-flowing in Crimea. Its ledge reaches 15 meters in height. Between these spots lies the Chatyr-Dag plateau, where visitors can explore the Marble and Emine-Bair-Khosar caves. A jeep tour from the town center to any of these points takes 5–6 hours and costs from 3,000 ₽ per person.
