Hotels in Evpatoriya

The densest cluster of hotels in Yevpatoria sits on Revolyutsii and Matveyeva streets and Ivana Chepurina Lane: the water is no more than five hundred metres away, and the walk out onto the Gorky Embankment passes cafés and the dolphinarium on its way to a fine-sand beach with a gentle slope into the sea. There are no large chain complexes here — the area runs on guest houses and small hotels of a dozen or two rooms, which keeps the mood family-oriented and seasonal. True beachfront in the usual sense barely exists in Yevpatoria: a path or a strip of park always runs between the promenade and the buildings, though that also means no roar of surf at night and no sand tracked into your room.

The Old Town is a compact square between the promenade and Karayeva Street, where a handful of blocks hold the 16th-century Juma-Jami Mosque, the Karaite kenassas, the dervish tekke, an Armenian church and the excavations of ancient Kerkinitis — all strung together by the "Little Jerusalem" walking route. Hotels here stand mainly on Tokareva, Franko and Pushkina streets, a ten- to fifteen-minute walk from the beach. It's the choice for travellers who want more than a sun lounger: narrow lanes and Karaite cooking in the morning, the sea in the afternoon, but no beach crush right under the windows.

The centre of Yevpatoria means Theatre Square, Frunze Park and resort-lined Duvanovskaya Street, an equally short hop from the promenade, the Old Town and the bus station. The hotels here feel distinctly urban: a staffed reception, a restaurant, doors open year-round rather than for three summer months. Handy if you have arrived without a car and want to step out for an evening walk instead of getting behind the wheel.

There are no large five-star complexes in Yevpatoria — this is a small-scale resort, and its comfort ceiling is held by three-star hotels with a pool, a bathhouse block and treatment rooms. Many of them grew out of the town's health-resort tradition, so next to the pool you will usually find mud therapy, massage and physiotherapy. That format earns its keep in May and September, when the sea is still or already bracing and cancelling the holiday isn't an option.

On the western edge of town lies the salt Lake Moynaki — the source of the therapeutic mud that has made Yevpatoria a known health resort since the 19th century, and in Soviet years the country's largest children's climatic spa. That tradition hasn't gone anywhere: sanatoriums and boarding houses occupy a niche of their own here, and the most convenient address for a treatment trip is Kiyevskaya Street by the railway station, next to the Yevpatoria-Kurort stop and the minibus routes to the treatment zones. Take it if you are coming for more than swimming and want the procedures in the same building where you sleep.

Two neighbouring addresses on Moskovskaya Street, 22 and 22A, have grown into a whole apartment cluster — several budget flats roughly a couple of kilometres from both the sea and the centre. Getting to the beach is easier by minibus or taxi, but in return you have your own kitchen, a washing machine and a separate entrance. It's a format for a one- or two-week trip, when you'd rather cook for yourself than live by the canteen timetable.

The other self-catering option is flats on Komsomolskaya, Pionerskaya, Pushkina and Kirova streets: the sea and the centre are both within walking distance, with no minibus timetable to plan around. It suits couples and small groups who want freedom in their day and a kitchen of their own rather than breakfast served by the clock. At the height of summer these are the first to go, so it's better to book ahead.

A category of its own is hotels with enclosed grounds and a pool of their own, where the beach isn't the only reason to come. That saves the trip at the start and the end of the season, when the sea is still cool, and on the windy days the west coast gets plenty of. Such places usually sit a little away from the dense resort streets, so count on a car or a transfer.

West of the city begins Zaozyornoye — the same strip of fine sand and gentle entry into the water, but without the city promenade and its evening crowds. Accommodation here leans towards the "step out of the building and you're on the beach" format, while the dolphinarium, the cafés and the strolling all mean a minibus or tram ride into Yevpatoria. A sensible trade-off if the point of the trip is the sea and quiet.

South along the shore stretch Pribrezhnoye, Novofyodorovka and Saki — a ribbon of holiday resorts and small hotels right by the water that grew up around the Saki mud-therapy clinic. The beaches are wider and less crowded than Yevpatoria's, and the city is half an hour's drive away. An option for those arriving by car who don't want to spend the night in the resort crush.

Further west the road runs on to Shtormovoye, Chernomorskoye and Cape Tarkhankut — no longer resort Yevpatoria but steppe, cliff-edged shores and almost empty beaches. The hotels there are small and the season is shorter than in the city, but the water is clearer and the crowds noticeably thinner. It makes sense if you're driving and ready to trade resort infrastructure for open space.
