The easiest base is the cluster by the Gorky Embankment, on Revolyutsii and Matveyeva streets and Ivana Chepurina Lane: the fine-sand beach with its gentle slope is a few minutes' walk away, and the dolphinarium, the "Banana Republic" water park and the dino park are all nearby. If you want to combine the sea with treatment, take a look at the sanatoriums and boarding houses by Lake Moynaki.

The calmest months for prices are May and the second half of September: the sea is already or still warm, and the beaches are noticeably emptier. The velvet season here runs from September into the first half of October — swimming is still possible, and a room costs appreciably less than at the peak of summer. July and August see maximum occupancy, so it's worth booking ahead.

There are no large five-star complexes in the city, and four-star properties turn up only here and there — Yevpatoria took shape as a small-scale family resort. The market rests on two- and three-star hotels, guest houses, budget apartments and sanatoriums. If you need an all-inclusive with extensive grounds and a pool, it makes more sense to look at Sevastopol, Yalta or Alushta.

They are two different formats. The apartments have a kitchen, a washing machine and a separate entrance and cost less, but the sea is about two kilometres away — you'll be taking a minibus or a taxi. A hotel or guest house by the promenade takes care of the cleaning and keeps a reception desk, and the water is a few hundred metres off; the choice comes down to whether you're prepared to cook for yourself every day.

The sea warms up by June and holds a comfortable temperature through September — the shallows near the shore heat faster than on Crimea's southern coast. By October the beaches empty out and only a few people swim, but the city turns quiet and well suited to walks through the Old Town and to treatment programmes.
