The area around the Three Stations is especially handy for those arriving by train who don't want to drag a suitcase across all of Moscow.
The Third Transport Ring and beyond. Hotels inside the TTK and in residential districts such as VDNKh, Leningradsky Prospekt and Dorogomilovo are usually chosen for other reasons: either a business trip to an office or an exhibition venue, or a tight budget. From almost any point on the outer ring you can reach the centre by metro in under half an hour.
When you're heading to Moscow for a week or longer, the standard hotel format with restaurant breakfasts starts to wear thin: you'd rather have dinner at home and not be tied to the hotel's schedule. By big-city standards, this is a rare case where "cheap" and "close to the centre" come together in a single booking.
For a first visit it's best to pick a district inside the Garden Ring, and ideally inside the Boulevard Ring. From there you can walk to the Kremlin, Tverskaya, Zaryadye and the Bolshoi Theatre. The Tretyakov Gallery and Gorky Park are a couple of metro stops away. If you stay beyond the Third Transport Ring, what you save on the room is often offset by taxi fares and time on the road.
An apart-hotel differs from a regular hotel in that the unit has a kitchen (at least a kitchenette), a fridge and often a washing machine. At the same time, the service remains hotel-style: a reception desk, housekeeping and security. Rates at apart-hotels drop noticeably when you book for a week or longer. The format works well for business trips, longer stays and families who like the freedom to cook and eat on their own schedule.
The most reliable option is to book a hotel near the airport that offers a shuttle to the terminals. That way you'll sleep just ten minutes from the check-in desk.
There's another option too: pick a hotel along Leningradsky Prospekt. From there you can reach Sheremetyevo by Aeroexpress or taxi in under an hour, and prices at these hotels are usually lower than at hotels right by the terminal.
