Moscow: What to See and When to Go

Moscow is the largest city in Europe, and it sprawls accordingly. For a visitor, the first task is not to "see everything" but to pick the axis of your route. The historic core — the Kremlin, Red Square and Zaryadye Park — can be covered in a single day. VDNKh and Gorky Park add another couple of days to the trip. The observation decks at Moscow City help you get to know the city's modern face. In summer, Moscow hosts festivals and opens up its embankments. In winter, the skating rinks and Christmas markets take over.

The Kremlin, Zaryadye and Tverskaya: the first-day axis

The city is home to 13.27 million people, and the distances match that scale. Yet almost every spot worth visiting on day one fits into a triangle running from Borovitsky Hill to Manezhnaya Square.

The Kremlin’s walls and towers were built between 1485 and 1495 under Ivan III. The fortress covers 27.5 hectares. Cathedral Square is the setting for the Assumption, Archangel and Annunciation Cathedrals.

From Red Square you can see the Cathedral of the Intercession (1555–1561) — it is on the UNESCO list, and is commonly known as St. Basil’s Cathedral. GUM stands right next to it.

From there, head down into Zaryadye Park. It opened in 2017 and is the first major park in the city center in half a century. The park features a floating bridge: it extends beyond the line of the Moskvoretskaya Embankment and does so without any supports.

By evening, it is convenient to walk up to Tverskaya and Manezhnaya Squares and then continue on to the Bolshoi Theatre. After the 2005–2011 restoration, the amphitheatre and Beethoven Hall were rebuilt according to the historical blueprints.

VDNKh, Moscow City and the metro as a museum: the modern line

Day two is usually planned for sights to the northeast.

VDNKh opened in 1939 as the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition (VSKhV). It covers 325 hectares. The grounds are home to 49 cultural heritage sites: the Friendship of Peoples fountain, the Cosmos pavilion with a full-scale Buran shuttle, and the Moskvarium.

From VDNKh the orange metro line takes you back to the center. From the center to Moscow City the ride on the blue line takes about twenty minutes.

In the business district, the towers rise from 235 to 374 metres. The PANORAMA360 observation deck is on the 89th floor of the Federation East tower; another viewing deck is in the OKO tower.

Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours for the route between these points — you will be travelling by metro.

Along the way, take a look at these stations:

  • Mayakovskaya won the Grand Prix at the 1939 New York World’s Fair;
  • Ploshchad Revolyutsii features 76 bronze sculptures by Manizer;
  • Komsomolskaya is a showcase of grand Stalin-era Empire style — nothing there distracts from the architectural ensemble.

The seasons in Moscow: winter rinks and summer festivals

The contrast between seasons is sharp. Winter is the city’s high season: from late November through early January the Journey to Christmas markets are open, the main rinks are flooded in Gorky Park and at VDNKh, and the light arches are switched on along Tverskaya and Manezhnaya Streets.

Summer is milder than the latitude suggests. During this time the Theatre Boulevard runs through the streets (May–August), Zaryadye stages the Matryoshka of Moscow light show (April–September), Ostankino hosts Sheremetev Fest on June 27–28, and the Gardens and Vegetable Gardens festival runs from May 30 to September 27.

The most comfortable stretches are late April, May, early June and September: there is no frost, and prices have not yet climbed to summer levels.

When not to brave the high season

Summer and the New Year holidays are the peak periods. On those days a night in the centre costs 1.5 to 2 times more, and queues at the Kremlin and the Tretyakov stretch out to an hour. If you can shift the trip to late May or the second half of September — do it.

Where to stay and how to get there

Moscow has four airports: Sheremetyevo (28 km from the centre), Vnukovo (28 km), Zhukovsky (36 km) and Domodedovo (42 km).

The Aeroexpress departs from Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domodedovo (DME) and Vnukovo (VKO) and brings you to the Belorussky, Paveletsky and Kievsky railway stations in 35 to 45 minutes.

From Saint Petersburg, you can reach Moscow on the Sapsan train from Leningradsky Station — the journey takes four hours. The route runs up to 15 services a day.

The Moscow metro system has 16 lines and more than 270 stations. There is also the overground Moscow Central Circle (MCC) — its loop runs for 54 km — along with the MCD-1 through MCD-4 diameters, which let you reach the suburbs without changing trains. The easiest way to pay is with a Troika card or a bank card.

Moscow counts 2,516 hotels. Prices start at around 7,700 ₽ per night. For example, V Hotel Tverskaya is just steps from Pushkin Square.

If you are looking for a premium-class hotel, consider The St. Regis Moscow Nikolskaya — it sits one stop from the Kremlin, with rates starting at 37,800 ₽.

If you plan to spend two or three days in Moscow, it is best to choose a hotel inside the Boulevard Ring. From there you can walk to the Kremlin, the Bolshoi Theatre and Zaryadye in 15 to 20 minutes.

Trip scenarios: a couple of days, kids, the Moscow Region

Scenario Route Where to stay
First trip, 2–3 days Visit the Kremlin and Zaryadye, walk along Tverskaya, drop into the Tretyakov Gallery and Gorky Park, then head to Moscow City Boulevard Ring
Winter weekend Skate at Gorky Park or VDNKh, swing by the market on Manezhnaya Square, and in the evening catch a show at the Bolshoi or the Moscow Art Theatre Tverskaya, Nikitskaya
With kids One day for VDNKh and the Moskvarium, another for Gorky Park and Muzeon. You can also fit in the zoo or the planetarium Yakimanka, Khamovniki
Moscow + the Moscow Region Spend a day in Sergiev Posad: tour the Lavra, on the UNESCO list. Or head to Kolomna: see the kremlin and visit the pastila museum Centre + a morning Lastochka

The Lastochka train leaves Yaroslavsky Station and reaches Sergiev Posad in about an hour. From Kazansky Station to Kolomna the trip takes around two hours. Zvenigorod and Pereslavl-Zalessky can also be done in a single day — a fine option if you want to step out of the megacity for a while.

Frequently asked questions about Москва

For a first visit it's best to pick a district inside the Garden Ring, and ideally inside the Boulevard Ring. From there you can walk to the Kremlin, Tverskaya, Zaryadye and the Bolshoi Theatre. The Tretyakov Gallery and Gorky Park are a couple of metro stops away. If you stay beyond the Third Transport Ring, what you save on the room is often offset by taxi fares and time on the road.

An apart-hotel differs from a regular hotel in that the unit has a kitchen (at least a kitchenette), a fridge and often a washing machine. At the same time, the service remains hotel-style: a reception desk, housekeeping and security. Rates at apart-hotels drop noticeably when you book for a week or longer. The format works well for business trips, longer stays and families who like the freedom to cook and eat on their own schedule.

The most reliable option is to book a hotel near the airport that offers a shuttle to the terminals. That way you'll sleep just ten minutes from the check-in desk.

There's another option too: pick a hotel along Leningradsky Prospekt. From there you can reach Sheremetyevo by Aeroexpress or taxi in under an hour, and prices at these hotels are usually lower than at hotels right by the terminal.

Below are ballpark minimum nightly prices by accommodation category. The exact rate will depend on the district, your dates and any major events taking place in the city.

  • First, register on the website or download our handy mobile app.
  • Enter your search parameters: dates, number of guests, filters by district or amenities. Click the “Search” button.
  • You’ll see a list of available hotels that match your preferences. Find the right option.
  • Carefully read all the conditions, choose a convenient payment method and pay for your booking.
  • Right after payment, a confirmation email will arrive in your inbox.

Booking is instant — there’s no need to wait for the owner to reply — everything happens immediately.

The Moya Bron platform offers bonus deals for its users. Get up to 10% off your first booking and 2000 rubles as a gift when you book from 20,000 rubles.
