Hotels in Adler

Central Adler is the old resort quarter around Kirova Street, Demokratichesky Lane and the southern end of Prosveshcheniya: the Bestuzheva promenade, the market and the restaurants are all within walking distance, and the railway station and the airport are only a few minutes away by car. It suits travelers who don't want to depend on transport and like to decide on the day whether they're heading for the sea or the mountains. This part of town is lively and noisy and the beach is pebble — for quiet and greenery, go further north.

The Imeretinskaya Lowland is the "new Adler": Olympic Park, the Fisht Stadium, Sochi Park with its rides, the racing circuit and a long landscaped promenade. Hotels here sit on large grounds with pools and entertainment programs, and the beach is wide and gently sloping — which is why families with children look at this area first. The trade-off is the travel time: getting to the old center and the railway station takes noticeably longer than from any other part of Adler.

Adler is one of the few Russian resorts where all-inclusive works as it should, but you have to look for it in Imeretinka and Sirius: the historic center and Kurortny Gorodok have almost nothing of the kind. These are newly built properties with extensive grounds, pools, their own stretch of beach and kids' entertainment, and breakfast, lunch and dinner are already covered by the room rate. The format pays off when you're traveling with children and don't want to solve the lunch question from scratch every day.

Kurortny Gorodok is the historic resort zone in the northern part of Adler, right by the sea: quiet leafy streets, Soviet-era sanatorium architecture along Lenina and Chkalova, and the Sochi Discovery World aquarium nearby. It is calmer and more spacious than the center, and the center itself is five to ten minutes away by car. A classic choice for anyone who came for the sea and unhurried walks rather than for city bustle.

Adler grew up as a medical resort: a humid subtropical climate, mineral waters and its own medical facilities. Most of the sanatorium infrastructure runs along Lenina Street in Kurortny Gorodok and through the northern part of the district — treatments and the beach end up within one short walk, so there's no half-day journey to see a doctor. Places for summer and September are taken as early as winter, so it's worth booking well ahead.

The beachfront strip runs the whole length of Adler — from the Bestuzheva promenade in the center through Kurortny Gorodok to the Imeretinsky promenade — and getting down to the water takes a minute or two anywhere along it. The main advantage is obvious: the beach below your window, a view from the balcony and no morning trek across half the town with towels. The downside is worth knowing in advance — at the height of the season the waterfront is noisy and crowded, and the beaches in Adler are pebble, so water shoes won't go to waste.

Sochi International Airport is in the Adler district rather than in Sochi itself, and the terminal is only ten to fifteen minutes from hotels in the center and in Imeretinka — far quicker than the trip from central Sochi. If you have an early departure, an overnight connection or a single night between flights, the easiest place to stay is by Adler railway station and the streets around it — Lenina, Kirova, Energetikov. From there you can walk to the sea and catch the Lastochka train without a taxi.

In winter Adler works as a base for skiers: the Lastochka train runs from the station to Rosa Khutor in about an hour, and a room by the sea costs noticeably less than one on the slopes. Temperatures on the coast stay above freezing at that time of year, so you can walk along the promenade in the evening and head back into the snow in the morning. Look for hotels with somewhere to store your gear, and build the trip to the station into your morning schedule.

Alongside the resort complexes, Adler has a huge private rental sector: guest houses on the quiet side streets of the center, apartments with kitchens and hostels closer to the Imeretinskaya Lowland. This is the option for long stays, for groups traveling together, or for anyone who wants to save on food by cooking at home. A couple of blocks back from the shore is almost always better value than the beachfront, and the sea is still only about ten minutes on foot.
