Sevastopol
Sevastopol is a rewarding blend of history, sea, and beautiful scenery. It is often called an "open-air museum," where every corner preserves the memory of the Crimean and Great Patriotic Wars, as well as the founding of the Black Sea Fleet. It is also a city of dozens of bays. Here you can soak up the atmosphere of the historic centre by Count's Landing, choose the quiet Streletskaya Bay, relax on the beaches of the North Side, or take in the views of Balaklava.
From Count’s Landing to Balaklava: The Main Routes
City centre. It’s best to start your walk at Count’s Landing (Grafskaya Pristan). Follow Primorsky Boulevard to the Monument to the Scuttled Ships and St. Vladimir’s Cathedral — the burial place of the admirals. From here you can take a passenger boat across the bay to the North Side.
Chersonesus Taurica. Take a trolleybus to Dmitry Ulyanov Street, then continue on foot. Waiting for you are the ruins of a 5th-century BC Greek polis, the famous Fog Bell (cast in Taganrog in 1778 from captured Turkish cannons), and a well-kept seaside park.
Military history. If military history draws you in, visit Malakhov Kurgan with its Kornilov Tower from 1854. See the Panorama of the Defence of Sevastopol (a canvas 115 metres long) and the Diorama of the Storming of Sapun Mountain.
Balaklava. Fifteen kilometres from the centre lies a narrow bay sheltered by cliffs. Above it rise the ruins of the Genoese fortress of Cembalo (14th century), and inside Mount Tavros is hidden the former classified site Object 825 GTS — a submarine base.
Here you can have lunch at the fish restaurants along Nazukin Embankment or head out to Golden and Silver beaches. You can reach them by boat or on foot along a scenic trail (about 6 km, 1.5 hours).
Cape Fiolent. A spot for lovers of panoramic views. Here you’ll find St. George’s Monastery and Jasper Beach. Be ready for a real workout: the path down to the sea and back is 800 steps.
When to Go and Where to Stay

- Beach season runs from May to September. In July and August the air warms up to +28 °C, and the sea becomes comfortable by June. September is the quietest time, without the crowds: daytime temperatures hold around +23 °C.
- Plan visits to Chersonesus and the museums for October (+17 °C). By then the exhausting heat and queues are gone. In winter, temperatures drop to +6…+8 °C — a good time for an unhurried look at history.

If you're planning a packed sightseeing programme, choose the centre: Grafskaya Pristan, Primorsky Boulevard and the main museums will all be within walking distance. For the sea, head to Gagarinsky district, where the landscaped beaches in the bays are a short walk away. Sand lovers will prefer the Northern Side; people go to Balaklava for the views and boat trips, and to Fiolent for solitude and wild beaches.
Swimming in Sevastopol Bay itself is not allowed — navy ships are moored there. The closest spot to the centre for a swim is the beach at Cape Khrustalny, about a quarter of an hour on foot from Primorsky Boulevard. For a proper beach day, people head to the bays of Gagarinsky district, the Northern Side or Balaklava.
The swimming season holds from late May to early September: in June the water is still bracing but the crowds haven't arrived, July and August are the hottest and busiest, and September combines a warm sea with a calm city. May and September are the best months for the history: comfortable weather and no queues at the museums. From November to March it's windy and rainy, but that's the season of empty embankments and the most peaceful trips.
For July and August, book at least a couple of months ahead: free rooms in the centre and on the seafront go quickly. For May and September, one to three weeks is usually enough. In the shoulder season, in April and October, demand is noticeably lower and there's no need to hurry.
The range is wide: the most affordable segment is hostels and guest houses on Fiolent and in the dacha bays, the middle is city hotels and apartments, and the top is resort complexes with a spa and a private beach. Price depends first of all on the district and how close you are to the sea, then on the season and the set of services on offer: a pool, meals and beach facilities push it up noticeably. The gap between peak summer and the shoulder season is felt in every segment.
