Beyond the Third Ring Road, whatever you save on the room is often eaten up by taxis and time on the road.

An aparthotel room has a kitchen or at least a kitchenette, a fridge and quite often a washing machine, but the service stays hotel-style: front desk, housekeeping, security. Hostels and hotels beyond the Third Ring Road come out cheapest, while five-star addresses inside the Boulevard Ring and apartments in the Moscow City towers are the most expensive.
