Gelendzhik
Gelendzhik Bay is almost perfectly round, like a saucer, and the promenade hugs it for 14 kilometres. No other seaside walk in Russia is this long. From the beach you can see the Markotkh Ridge, and a cable car from the Safari Park climbs to its crest: just 20 minutes, and the whole resort unfolds beneath your feet. The local airport has been running again since July 2025, so the trip from Moscow to the sea takes four hours by air.
The Cable Car, the Bay and the Vineyards: Why People Come
The main route begins by the water. The central beach stretches for about 1.5 km along the bay. The bottom is covered with fine sand and the entry into the water is gentle. That is why families with small children most often head here.
Plan on spending half a day at the Safari Park. There you will find a rehabilitation centre for tigers, bears and lynxes, along with a 1,600 m chairlift. It rises to 640 m above sea level. From the top you get a view of the entire bay, and in the evening paragliders take off from there.
Next come the shorter excursions. Tolstyi Cape is home to the Stvorny Lighthouse and the Château de Talu winery. It was founded in 2005 on the 45th parallel.
Kabardinka with its Old Park is 15 minutes away by minibus. Divnomorskoye and the ancient Dzhankhot pine grove take about half an hour. An hour will get you to Abrau-Durso. This historic sparkling-wine estate, founded in 1870, sits on the shore of the lake of the same name.
Choose a place to stay that matches your itinerary. The catalogue currently lists 175 hotels in Gelendzhik — from the Kraski guest house at 2,950 ₽ to Bellagio with a 9.8 rating.
When to Go: Beach Season, Velvet Season and Winter Quiet
The beach season is long — from late May to the end of September. The hottest months are July and August. The hotels and the promenade fill up with visitors then, so it is worth booking accommodation 4–6 months in advance.
By June the water is already around +21 °C, and at the peak of the season it climbs to +26 °C.
Velvet season falls in September and the first half of October. Air temperatures sit at +22…+25 °C, the sea still holds its warmth, and the flow of tourists eases off.
You cannot swim in winter, but the cable car, the wineries and the Safari Park run as usual. Accommodation prices are at their lowest in this period. On a clear weekend you can watch the sunrise in complete silence atop the Markotkh Ridge, sometimes with the north-easterly “bora” wind for company.
