Anapa
People come here for the sandy shallow waters, the silt mud of the Kizyltash Estuary and the Semigorskaya mineral water — it is poured at the pump rooms of the sanatoriums. Ancient Gorgippia sits in the open air in the city centre — just ten minutes from the Anapa Lighthouse. The northern suburbs of Dzhemete and Vityazevo hide their beaches behind dunes up to 20 metres high. The swimming season in Anapa runs from May through October. During the velvet season in September, the water temperature holds at +23…+25 °C.
Vysokiy Bereg and Gorgippia: The Main Walk Through the City
Old Anapa is fairly compact: you can walk between the lighthouse, Gorgippia and the Russian Gates in just an hour.
The lighthouse stands on a cliff — a white tower with a postcard view of the bay. From there you can descend to the Central Beach or head for the pebble coves of Vysokiy Bereg: fewer umbrellas, more quiet.
Gorgippia is an open-air excavation of an ancient Bosporan city. You can see paved streets and the foundations of houses — they sit right next to café tables. The Gorgippia collection holds more than 40,000 artefacts.
Five minutes’ walk away stand the Russian Gates — the only surviving fragment of an Ottoman fortress from the late 18th century.
In the evening, tourists usually head back to Gorky Street and the promenade. There are plenty of fish cafés — they serve red mullet and grey mullet — as well as shashlyk grills with Kuban cuisine.
For sand dunes 15–20 metres high and Greek souvlaki, it is worth taking a trip to Vityazevo. It lies 11 km to the north, next to the airport.
When to Go: June, September and the Kinoshok Festival
Peak season in Anapa is July and August. The water temperature reaches +28 °C, the beaches are crowded, and prices at Anapa hotels rise two- to threefold.
The best time to visit is June and September. The water is still — or already — warm, there are fewer tourists, and accommodation prices drop by 30–50%.
In late September the city hosts Kinoshok, an open festival of films from the CIS and Baltic states. Visitors can enjoy a children’s programme and open-air screenings. The velvet swimming season begins around the same time.
Winter is a low-demand period for beach holidays. However, sanatoriums offering mud therapy and Semigorskaya mineral water operate year-round. Room rates in winter fall three- to fivefold compared with August.

Frequently asked questions about Anapa
The start of Pionersky Prospekt works best: family resorts there have gated grounds, entertainment programs, children's pools and access to a gently sloping sandy beach. An alternative is the resort quarter at the far end of the avenue, where several buildings share the same children's facilities. If you want quiet and don't mind pebbles, look toward Sukko.
It is a separate village roughly 10 km north of the city, with its own Greek-style promenade and its own infrastructure. The beach is the same — the sandy spit continues here without a break — but there are noticeably fewer people and less city noise, and accommodation is usually cheaper. The main practical advantage: AAQ airport sits effectively inside the village, so the transfer takes a matter of minutes.
The swimming season lasts from mid-June to late September, with the peak in heat, occupancy and rates falling in July and August. In the velvet season the sea is still warm and a room costs noticeably less — especially at the resorts on Pionersky Prospekt. In late autumn and winter mainly the sanatoriums stay open, and that is the calmest and most budget-friendly period.
All-inclusive pays off if you plan to barely leave the grounds: meals, drinks, pools and entertainment are already in the rate, and there is nothing to keep track of. If you would rather have dinner at a cafe on Gorkogo Street and take trips to the wineries, the Lotus Valley and the Utrish reserve, a hotel with breakfast in the center or on the Vysoky Bereg is the better deal.
The pebbles begin right past the center, on the Vysoky Bereg: cliffs, stairways down to the water and real depth a couple of steps from shore. Another option is the bay at Sukko and, farther on, Bolshoy Utrish, where the water is the clearest on the coast. The sandy spit, by contrast, runs north from Central Beach through Dzhemete to Vityazevo.
