Krasnaya Polyana

Krasnaya Polyana

Mornings in Krasnaya Polyana start with a choice: ride the cable car up to alpine meadows or hit the ski slopes right away. Three of Russia's most popular ski resorts sit in the Mzymta River valley — Rosa Khutor, Krasnaya Polyana Resort, and Gazprom Mountain Resort. Getting here is fast and convenient: the Lastochka high-speed train covers the distance from the sea faster than a taxi in rush hour. Travellers come for snowy slopes, waterfalls, and heights of up to 2,320 metres.

Rosa Khutor, Krasnaya Polyana, and Gazprom: Three Clusters in One Valley

Three of the country’s leading resorts line the Mzymta River. Despite being neighbours, each has its own character and audience.

  • Rosa Khutor is the largest and most prestigious resort. Expect alpine architecture along the embankment and the final Lastochka stop. The “Caucasian Express” departs from here and climbs up to Rosa Peak.
  • Krasnaya Polyana Resort (formerly “Gorki Gorod”) is a convenient choice if you want to stay right in the middle of the action: the lower cable-car station sits directly in the village of Esto-Sadok.
  • Gazprom Mountain Resort is quieter and more understated. The “Laura” trails are ideal for family holidays and beginners, while the “Alpika” slopes suit experienced riders. In Esto-Sadok, the resort operates the “Galaktika” complex, which includes a water park and an ice arena.

You can also stay outside the resort zones

The village of Krasnaya Polyana sits at about 600 metres above sea level. Sanatoriums, trout ponds, and guesthouses line the riverbank here.

The village of Esto-Sadok lies 4 km higher up and offers a large selection of major hotels: Novotel Resort and Spa Krasnaya Polyana, Grand Hotel Polyana, and Ikos Polyana.

In total, Moya Bron offers 69 Krasnaya Polyana hotels, with prices starting from 6,300 ₽ per night.

Summer in the Mountains: Rosa Peak and Mendelikha Waterfall Park

In summer, visitors come for new experiences and scenic views.

Rosa Peak (2,320 m) is the upper tourist station of Rosa Khutor resort. It offers a panorama of the Main Caucasus Ridge, and on a clear day you can even spot the Black Sea. A summer sightseeing round-trip ticket costs roughly 2,850 ₽ for an adult and 1,700 ₽ for a child (2025–2026 season).

From Rosa Peak, you can head over to Mendelikha waterfall park. Seven waterfalls, up to 77 metres tall, are set on the southern slope of Mount Aibga inside the park.

On the other side of the valley stands the Polikarya waterfall — a two-tier cascade 72 metres high. A rock splits the upper streams, and about halfway down they merge, forming a distinctive shape that earned the waterfall the nickname “The Trousers.” The waterfall is fed by the Chornaya Piramida glacier.

The easiest way to reach Polikarya is from Krasnaya Polyana Resort. You ride three cable cars in sequence — “Krasnaya Polyana” (up to “Polyana 960”), then “Vostochny Les,” and finally “Vodopad Polikarya.” From the final station, it’s about an 800-metre walk.

Summer daytime temperatures in the valley can reach +27 °C, but it’s always cool at around 2,000 metres — even in July, don’t forget to pack a jacket.

Frequently asked questions about Krasnaya Polyana

The most affordable three-star hotels and guest houses are in Esto-Sadok and in the old village of Krasnaya Polyana. The average rate in Esto-Sadok is still higher: it has many four-star hotels and apartments, while the old village is mostly privately owned houses. Season affects the budget even more — in winter a stay in the valley costs 2–3 times what it does in summer, and the peak falls on the New Year holidays and the February school break.

Yes. The Rosa Khutor, Krasnaya Polyana and Gazprom cable cars run year-round and take you up to viewing platforms where the trails to the Bzerpinsky Cornice and the Mendelikha waterfalls begin. Nearby are the AJ Hackett Skypark on Sulimovka, the Galaktika water park and the animal enclosure complex of the Caucasian Nature Reserve. The mountains are cooler than Adler and Sochi, and accommodation is noticeably cheaper in summer.

Apartments come with a kitchen, cookware and a washing machine, so on a stay of a week or more, cooking and doing laundry "at home" saves a noticeable amount. There is one drawback: a large share of the apart-hotels sit in the old village, and reaching the cable car means a 5–10 minute drive or shuttle ride, whereas from Esto-Sadok you can usually walk to the lift.

The Lastochka train from Adler station to Esto-Sadok takes about 55 minutes, and from there a bus or taxi goes on to Rosa Khutor, Krasnaya Polyana or Gazprom. By taxi the drive from the airport along the A-149 highway takes 40–50 minutes, covering about 40 kilometers.
